Starting July 1, WriftAI is switching from end-of-month invoicing to a prepaid credit system. If you're a current user, you'll receive one final invoice at the end of June covering everything you've run this month. From July 1 onward, you'll need credits in your account to run models.

This post explains the change, how the new system works, and what you need to do before the switch.

Why we're doing this

I want to be straight with you about why we're making this change.

Post-paid billing has a structural problem for an infrastructure company at our stage. When you run a model, the compute happens now. We pay for it now. The invoice goes out 30 days later. That gap means every active user is effectively running on a short-term line of credit from us. We absorb the cost upfront and collect later.

Prepaid is the right model for where we are. It lets us build and maintain infrastructure without carrying that float, which ultimately means we can keep the platform reliable and keep investing in it.

But there is a real benefit on your side too, and I don't want to gloss over it. With post-paid billing, your spend accumulates in the background. The bill at month end is often a surprise, or at least requires mental accounting you'd rather not do. With prepaid, your budget is explicit from the start. You load what you want to spend. Your account cannot go negative without you knowing. You have full visibility at all times.

Both of those things are true. It's better for us operationally, and it's cleaner for you.

How credits work

Credits are consumed as you run models. The pricing is unchanged from today. Compute time is billed per second, rounded up to the nearest second, based on the hardware tier you're using. Cold starts are not charged. Cancelled workloads stop accruing charges immediately.

You can purchase credits from the Billing section of your dashboard. Your balance is shown there in real time so you always know where you stand.

A few things worth knowing:

  1. Expiry: Credits are valid for one year from the date you purchase them. If you're a regular user, this will never matter.
  2. What happens if you run out: If your credit balance hits zero mid-run, the excess charges to the default payment method on file. Your run is not interrupted. This is the same card you have saved today, so nothing changes there.
  3. What's free: Metadata queries, status checks, and anything that doesn't spin up compute are not charged. Same as before.

The full details are in the billing documentation.

Setting up auto-reload

The single most important thing to do before July 1 is turn on auto-reload. It takes about 30 seconds.

You set two values: a minimum balance and a target balance. When your account drops below the minimum, it automatically tops up to the target using your default payment method.

As an example: set your minimum to $20 and your target to $100. When your balance reaches $19, WriftAI charges your card $81 and brings you back to $100. It happens in the background. You won't notice it.

If you prefer to manage credits manually, you can do that instead. Load what you need, top up when you're low. Auto-reload is optional. But if your workloads run continuously or you'd rather not think about it, enabling it is the right call.

What happens on July 1

Here is the exact sequence:

  • Now through June 30: Everything works as it does today. Usage is tracked and billed at the end of the month.
  • End of June: You receive a final invoice for all usage through June 30. This invoice is generated and charged the same way your monthly invoices have always worked.
  • July 1: The account switches to prepaid. Credits are required to run models. Your payment method stays on file. You do not need to re-enter anything.

From that point, auto-reload handles top-ups automatically if you've enabled it. If you're managing manually, just make sure you have credits before you need them.

The API and pricing are all unchanged. This is purely a billing model change.

If you're running at scale

If self-serve credits don't fit how your team operates, reach out to us directly. We handle high-volume accounts differently and are happy to talk through what makes sense for your situation.

If you have questions about your account or the transition, you can reach us through the support form or on Discord.

The system switches on July 1. Set up auto-reload now and you won't have to think about it again.
